Meet with David Aitken, the author of The Little Saw Mill Run Railroad – It’s Life & Legacy, as he lectures about the people, life and times of The Little Saw Mill Run Railroad.
The Little Saw Mill Run Railroad was chartered in April 1851 and the Harmony Society invested in the railroad in October 1852. Within a few months Jacob Henrici was the Treasurer, a position he would hold until his death in 1892. The railroad was built to haul coal 3.4 miles from its own and other mines to a barge loading facility on the Ohio River at Temperanceville. Today the area is known as the West End of Pittsburgh.
Under Henrici’s guidance the Little Saw Mill Run Railroad was involved in the development of the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad and the Pittsburgh Chartiers and Youghiogheny Railway. As a corporation the Little Saw Mill Run went out of business in 1895 and soon was a part of George J. Gould’s transcontinental railroad scheme.

Free to the public. Seats are limited. Pre registration is required.

The lecture will take place in the Granary (the big white building) in Old Economy Village.
