Introduction to Printing

Come dressed for a mess and be ready to roll up those sleeves. This class is an active, up-close, hands-on, make-and-take exploration of Letterpress Printing. Do you have what it takes to be an apprentice in a 19th century print shop? You had better mind your p’s and q’s!

Participants will:

  • Learn the history of letterpress printing with a focus on 1800’s. 
  • Operate three different 19th century presses.
  • Make and take prints of Harmonist documents on an 1833 iron press.
  • Learn to set moveable type by hand as it was done in the 1800’s.
  • Print copies of their hand-set type on an 1893 iron hand press.

Tip: Bring along a short quote, lyric, or poem you would like to print. Brevity is your buddy as every letter must be set by hand.

$85 for non-members

Wheel Spinning

Ever wonder how yarn is made? This workshop will be a hands-on spinning lesson on provided spinning wheels. Bring your own wheel if you have one and want to learn. Fiber will be provided.

$20.00 per person.

Ages 16 years and older.

Class is limited to only eight per session. Registration is required.

Blacksmithing classes at Old Economy Village are ideal for adults interested in learning the history of metalworking in a historically accurate setting. The classes take place in a reconstructed 19th century smithy and traditional techniques are emphasized. The introduction classes cover all the necessary techniques to forge metal, create bends and twist metal producing a decorative S hook.

Blacksmithing Class Prices:

  • $150 for non-member
  • $125 for members

Blacksmith Apprentice Bundle: Expand your blacksmithing skills even further with this 2-class package that includes our introductory blacksmithing class and intermediate level class. Students save $20 when purchasing this bundle rather than purchasing classes individually.

Apprentice Bundle Prices:

    • $280 for non-members
    • $230 for members

Art & History Camp

The Old Economy Village Summer History Camp will explore what is a community. It will examine what a community needs to be successful, our role in the community and how we can make a difference. Children will learn about some of the key historical figures of the Harmony Society as they visit different locations in the Village. They will experience various trades and activities that the Harmony Society practiced in the 1820s such as rope making, gardening, baking, and weaving.

 

The Old Economy Village Summer Art Camp will explore various art and craft in the historic context of the buildings and collections at Old Economy Village. Children will learn about fiber arts such as weaving and dying cloth which will include making a tie dye shirt. Examples in the historic buildings of reverse glass painting will be shown with children then learning how to do reverse glass paining. They will visit the print shop and try printing. They will have the opportunity to tour and sketch animal specimens in Natural History Museum. They will see how before photography; some people would capture their likeness by making silhouette. They will see silhouettes in the collection and have their own silhouette made of them.

Intermiediate Blacksmithing

Students in the Intermediate classes will build on skills learned in the Introduction class and can make either a blanket pin or letter opener.

19th Century Woodworking Class
Jul 29 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

Learn the tools, materials, techniques & history of the 19th century woodworker at Old Economy Village.  Discover the methods used by the Harmonists’ cabinetmakers and carpenters while making decorative and useful objects from wood.  Classes focus on the basics of woodworking or can help you expand your skills. Students will use historic hand tools, including sharpening and safety and can focus on basic joinery, dovetails, or wedged mortise and tenon depending on skills and interest.

Woodworking Class Pricing:

  • $125 for non-members
  • $100 for members
